Omitted texts

Monographs are omitted from the British Pharmacopoeia and British Pharmacopoeia (Veterinary) to ensure that the publications remain relevant, current, and comprehensive. A monograph may be considered for omission where it no longer holds a UK marketing authorisation or is no longer in widespread use.

Before any omission is made, the British Pharmacopoeia undertakes a detailed consultation process involving Expert Advisory Groups (EAGs), the British Pharmacopoeia Commission (BPC), and international organisations such as the World Health Organization to assess the potential impact on users in the UK and internationally.

Monographs proposed for omission are also published for public consultation. In addition, the EAG for Unlicensed Medicines (ULM) is consulted to determine whether the monograph continues to be used in an unlicensed capacity. Where appropriate, the text may remain within the BP as a monograph for an unlicensed formulation, with reference to the general monograph for Unlicensed Medicines.

When a monograph is omitted, the last published version remains legally in force under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 and continues to be available through the BP Archive. For example, the monograph for Standardised Senna Granules was omitted from BP 2026 due to the absence of UK marketing authorisations, however the previously published BP 2025 version remains valid and accessible within the Archive.

A list of monographs removed from the British Pharmacopoeia and British Pharmacopoeia (Veterinary) between 2000 and 2013 is available below. This includes the last edition in which each monograph appeared, along with a direct link to that version.

The BP cannot provide individual monographs from these publications due to the number of other texts that are required to support the monographs, such as general notices and appendices.
